12th Annual Olde Towne Scottish Walk

12th Annual Olde Towne Scottish Walk

Event is free to the public. Walk begins at 3:30 PM at the corner of Queen and Washington Streets. After the tuning of the pipes (about 4 PM) walk continues through Olde Towne to the foot of High Street. Flag raising ceremony Honoring George Washington's raising of the first flag "the Grand Union" on New Year's Day. Singing of Auld Lang Syne to thank the merchants for their work in the holiday season and to wish the community GOOD LUCK in the coming year. Music in pubs and Lighted Boat Parade following the walk.

Festive fish, jumping dolphins, frolicking porpoises – all in bright, colored lights against the clear night-time sky, are the stars of McDonald’s Holiday Lights at the Beach, presented by Ntelos Wireless, a nautical and holiday-themed light display at the Virginia Beach oceanfront! They are joined by Santa, elves, and a 40-foot tall Christmas tree erected on the beach and in the beautiful parks along the Virginia Beach boardwalk. It’s the only time of the year that cars get to drive right on the boardwalk! For over 30 blocks, almost 40,000 vehicles a year make the trek through this holiday wonderland.

Recipe Sunday: Orange Cake

My husbands family LOVES orange cake.  Grandma Gertie used to make it for their birthdays.  I hope you enjoy it as much as they do!

Gertie's Orange Cake

• 2 1/2 cup cake flour
• 1 1/2 cup sugar
• 1/4 tsp baking soda 
• 1 tsp salt
•  3 tsp baking powder
• 1/2 cup shortening
• 1 tsp grated orange rind
• 1/4 cup orange juice
• 3/4 cup C milk
•  2 eggs
  

Preheat oven at 350 degrees.
Step 1: sift all dry ingredients together
Step 2: drop in shortening and orange zest and 2/3 of liquid (milk and oj) and beat for 2 min
Step 3: combine wet and dry ingredients.  Mix until combined.
Step 4: add eggs and the remaining liquid...mix for 2 mins
Step 5: Grease and flour a 13x9 metal pan.  Pour in cake batter into the pan.
Step 6: Bake at 350 for 35-40 min.  Test with a toothpick to make sure its done.
Step 7: Let cool in pan for at least 2 hours...the longer the better.  If you feel any warm spots, let it cool some more.

Orange Icing 

(Grandma Gertie didn't have a written recipe for this-she did it by eye- so I found one online that used the same ingredients)

• 3/4  cup  butter, softened
• 2  teaspoons  grated orange rind
• 1  (16-oz.) package confectioners sugar
• 2  to 3 Tbsp. orange juice

1. Beat butter and orange rind at medium speed with an electric mixer until creamy. Gradually add confectioners sugar, beating until well blended.

2. Stir in 2 Tbsp. orange juice, adding additional orange juice, if necessary, to reach desired consistency.

On Dec. 24, the web site will stream videos, captured by NORAD (North American Aerospace Defense Command ) "Santa Cams," from numerous cities along Santa's journey. The "NORAD Tracks Santa" web site is available at http://www.noradsanta.org .

Also children and the young-at-heart will be able to track Santa through Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Flickr, and TroopTube.mil. To follow on any of these web sites, type in @noradsanta into the noradsanta.org's search engine.

But until then you can see that Santa's elves have been busier than usual this year preparing for Christmas Eve. Visit Santa's Village to see what's been going on, and join in on the fun! (there are some fun games etc)
