Do you know the difference between Historic Jamestowne & the Jamestown Settlement?
I didn't even know Historic Jamestowne existed until yesterday. Just down the road from the Jamestown Settlement is the site of the actual Jamestown colony. (This is part of the National Parks system so if you have a pass you can use that to gain entry)
So what are the differences you ask? Well I guess the major difference is that Historic Jamestown is the real deal. During the summer months you can see the archeologist continue their work to excavate the original fort & artifacts. (during the off season staff is still on site to answer questions however ground is too hard to actively dig) Additionally, certain times of the year you have the opportunity to get up close tours of areas normally closed to the public. (click the TOURS link on their site for more info)
The Jamestown Settlement is a living history museum that gives you the opportunity to experience what life was like for the colonists by immersing the visitor in a replica of the colony, an Indian village, the 3 colonist ships (which you can board) & the fort. Staff is dressed as the colonist/Indians would have been and are there to demonstrate everyday life & answer questions.
All in all I found them both to be very interesting and informative. They both have traditional museums that house original artifacts however, I think purists and families with older children would enjoy Historic Jamestowne a bit more. The Jamestown Settlement seemed a bit more family friendly & would hold the attention of younger children better. Either way get out there have fun!
